“Let’s go Plogging for the planet!”

Kathmandu, Nepal | Pariwartak | 2022

They say “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” We want to make this less a metaphor and more a literal reality in our region of Nepal. We are Pariwartak.

The Right-Sized Problem

Our capital, Kathmandu, is filled with plastic trash. But it’s not only about figuring out how to reduce the amount of trash – it’s also about how we can boost civic consciousness, and social responsibility through campaigning, entrepreneurship, and collaboration.

What did we do?

Tackling waste management doesn’t always have to be dirty and boring. We created a campaign called ‘plogging’ – jogging and picking up litter to raise funds for various plastic waste initiatives in our community.

Using the beloved Red Panda mascot, we organized and promoted plogging sessions in various locations. We have regular ploggers around the Pashupatinath temple and hope to bring hundreds more on board in the coming months.

How did we do it?

Impact on the young community of Kathmandu

First off, we've got more than 90 ploggers who are jogging and picking up plastic litter. Making the planet cleaner while staying fit, how cool is that? 🏃‍♂️🌍 Next up, we teamed up with 200+ super talented school and college students in a contest. They shared their poems and speeches, raising their voices and creativity for climate solutions. It's like a burst of inspiration! 💡🗣️

But wait, there's more! We've inspired over 1,000 amazing people around Pashupatinath to cut down on plastic waste. Let's protect that beautiful heritage site together! 🕌♻️ And guess what? We're not alone – we've got 40+ incredible youths in our eco-workshops. Together, we're learning how to refuse, reuse, reduce, repurpose, and recycle waste like champs! 🌿

And the word is spreading! We've shared our campaign with more than 2,000 people through social media and those snazzy multimedia ads.

Words from Pariwartak

“The most significant skill that I learned is the ability to communicate complex scientific and environmental concepts effectively to a diverse audience. This requires understanding the target audience's background, values, and concerns, as well as being able to present information in a clear, concise, and compelling manner.” – Rajesh Karki
