Resilience to Coastal Erosion

Vanuatu | Resilience to Coastal Erosion - NNEFA | 2024

Halo olgeta!

We are Ntalpuk Ning Epang Faum Association (NNEFA), a youth-led movement committed to safeguarding our coastal communities from the impacts of climate change. In 2024, we launched Resilience to Coastal Erosion, a campaign to raise awareness, engage local youth, and explore solutions to protect Pango Village’s shoreline. Our mission? To restore coastal ecosystems, educate communities on erosion prevention, and empower young people to lead climate adaptation efforts.

The Right-Sized Problem

Coastal erosion in Pango Village is a growing threat, causing loss of land, damage to infrastructure, and increasing vulnerability to extreme weather events. Many residents lack awareness of erosion’s long-term effects, and few community-driven solutions exist. Without action, climate change will continue to weaken Vanuatu’s coastal resilience.

What did we do?

Through community-led surveys, workshops, and digital engagement, we worked to educate, inform, and mobilize residents in protecting their coastline.

Offline Impact

📊 Community Surveys on Coastal Erosion – Conducted household interviews to assess local knowledge and concerns about erosion.
📚 Environmental Education Workshops – Hosted awareness sessions where residents learned about coastal protection measures and ecosystem restoration.

Online & Media Impact

📱 Social Media Awareness – Shared workshop highlights and campaign updates through NNEFA’s Facebook page, engaging a broader audience in climate conversations.
📢 Youth Engagement Through Sports Partnerships – Collaborated with sports leaders, using their platforms to reach new audiences and engage more young people in the conversation.

Campaign Impact

  • 50+ people engaged through in-person activities.

  • 100+ people reached online through social media advocacy.

  • Youth-led discussions sparked community interest in erosion prevention.

  • 5 new youth members joined NNEFA after the campaign.

A notable success was the participation of youth who had never engaged in environmental advocacy before. Seeing them gain confidence, contribute ideas, and creatively illustrate solutions reinforced our belief in youth-led climate action.

What’s Next?

We are expanding our impact by:
