Ending Early & Forced Marriage

Indonesia | Ending Early & Forced Marriage - Agent of Change in Southwest Sumba | 2024

Halo!

We are Agent of Change in Southwest Sumba, a youth-led movement formed by two groups, Sunrise and Unstoppable Generation. Together, we are fighting to end child, early, and forced marriage (CEFM) in our communities. In 2024, we launched our Child Protection Campaign to raise awareness, educate youth, and advocate for stronger protections. Our mission? To ensure every child has the right to grow, learn, and dream—free from forced marriage and violence.

The Right-Sized Problem

Many young people in Southwest Sumba lack awareness about child marriage and its harmful consequences. In rural areas, forced marriage remains a common practice, limiting children’s futures. Without education, advocacy, and policy change, this cycle will continue.

What did we do?

Over two months, we carried out a multi-platform campaign reaching schools, villages, and online audiences.

Offline Impact

📢 Socialization Workshops – We held interactive awareness sessions in 7 schools and 8 villages, engaging students, parents, and community leaders.
💬 Talk Shows & Advocacy Events – Partnered with government agencies to discuss child protection and violence prevention.
🎲 Interactive Games – Used True or False quizzes and puzzle challenges to debunk myths about child marriage.
🗣️ Youth Pledge Celebration – Our campaigners delivered advocacy messages at a high-level government event, securing commitments from local leaders.
🎭 Child Protection Festival – Hosted a community-wide event featuring Color Run & Fun Walk, Art Performances & Mural Competitions, Screening of the “Stop Child Marriage” Video and Public Declarations for Child Protection

Online & Media Impact

📲 Social Media Campaign – Shared educational content and advocacy messages on Instagram, growing to 249 followers.
🎥 Campaign Video – The “Stop Child Marriage” video reached 10.7K views, spreading awareness far beyond our local communities.
🎙️ Radio Talk Show (RRI Sumba) – Live discussions with child advocates Angel and Ovin, reaching a wider audience through public media.

Impact in Numbers

  • 945 people reached through offline events (schools, villages, & festival).

  • 4 advocacy points delivered to local government.

  • 3 new partnerships formed with community organizations & institutions.

  • 10.7K+ views on our campaign video, spreading awareness globally.

Campaign Impact

One of the most powerful moments of the campaign was the Child Protection Festival, where local NGOs, schools, and youth groups came together to amplify the message. As Gizella, a 15-year-old student shared

"I learned that as children, we have the right to learn and grow instead of being forced into marriage. This campaign was both exciting and educational"

What’s Next?

Our work doesn’t stop here! Moving forward, we plan to:
📌 Expand the campaign to more schools and villages.
📌 Strengthen our online presence (@agenperubahansbd) to reach a larger audience.
📌 Collaborate with DP3AP2KB to develop Child Forums, empowering youth to advocate for their rights.
📌 Train new youth activists through SHIFTER peer coaching.
