The Right-Sized Problem

The remote community of Tasgibji has been facing a quiet struggle in the middle of ongoing regional conflicts. For the past three years, the children have been displaced from their homes and normal lives. Instead of going to school, many children have been helping their families earn a living. This change not only affected their daily lives but affected the community’s outlook on the importance of education, making it the last priority.

What did we do?

Understanding the unique challenges and needs of the Tsagibji community was crucial, especially with the ongoing conflict. Determined to make a change, we got started with the “All Children to School'' initiative. The heart of this movement was a grand march that rallied the entire community. People from all walks of life in Tsagibji – children, parents, and respected elders –gathered with a shared purpose: to advocate for the education of their youngest members.

We also held an outdoor comedy-drama performed in the local dialect. The play told the story of a family much like any other in Tsagibji. Initially they didn’t see the value in education, but as the story unfolded, they witnessed the benefits it could bring. By the end, the family had a complete change of heart, deciding to commit to their child’s education.

This powerful performance wasn’t just entertaining. It became a mirror for many in the audience, reflecting their own doubts and hopes. The event was a hit, attended by 2,000 people including children, families and the local sector office representatives.

Campaign Impact

The effects of our campaign initiative were profound, showing how much change can happen even in a small locality. The results spoke volumes: 600 children were sent back to school following the campaign. What’s more, the commitment shown by the adults in the community – from the elders, religious leaders or families – promised a sustainable change. This ensures that the march towards education wasn’t just a single event, but a lasting movement.

This is only the beginning for the Tsagibji community. From simple, yet engaging initiatives, the locality has taken bold steps towards making sure that education is a priority. Our hope is that every child will make their way to school, equipped with the belief and support that they need to thrive in this world.
